Xidian University

Xidian University has two campuses, north campus and south campus, occupying an area of 270 hectares, with the building area of over 1,300,000 square meters. Its two libraries boast a collection of 6.14 million volumes, of which there are about 2.34 million paper documents and about 3.8 million electronic documents, 1300 journals in foreign languages, and electronic resources in Chinese and foreign languages on 45 platforms with about 120 databases, covering all the disciplines and specialties of the university. Presently, the university has more than 30,000 students of all sorts, of whom there are over 1700 doctoral candidates and 9000 master degree seeking students. It has set up 16 schools — School of Telecommunications Engineering, School of Electronic Engineering, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Mechatronic Engineering, School of Physics and Opto-electronic Engineering, School of Economics and Management, School of Humanities, School of Foreign Languages, School of Software Engineering, School of Microelectronics, School of Life Science and Technology, School of Aerospace Science and Technology, School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, School of International Education, and School of Network and Continuing Education.

Xidian University is one of the institutions of higher learning in China which earliest established the specialties of information theory, information system engineering, radar, microwave antenna, electronic-mechanical engineering, and electronic countermeasure, being the forerunner of the IT discipline of China and forming distinct characteristics and advantages of electronic and information disciplines. It has 2 national first-level key disciplines (covering 6 second-level disciplines), 1 national second-level key discipline, 33 provincial/ministerial-level key disciplines, 12 first-level disciplines with the right to award doctoral degrees, 20 first-level disciplines with the right to award master’s degrees, 7 postdoctoral programs, and 50 undergraduate specialties. In the national third-round assessment of the first-level disciplines in China, its“information and communication engineering” ranked second and its“electronic science and technology”ranked fourth.

Xidian University has established the ideas of “people-oriented”and “teachers being the core competitive ability of a university”, and forged a well-structured contingent of teachers with an innovative spirit. At present, there are over 1900 full-time teachers, of whom 279 are advisors for doctoral candidates, 845are advisors for master degree seeking students. The university constantly brings forth teaching ideas, deepens the reform in the teaching content, the curriculum system and the practice teaching, and vigorously promotes quality education, with remarkable results. Currently, it has 15 national-grade featured specialties, 13 national-grade quality courses, 3 national bases for talents training and teaching, 5 national-grade experiment teaching demonstration centers, and 3 national-grade innovation experimental areas for talents-training modes. Renowned in its talents training for features of solid theoretical foundation, outstanding engineering practice ability, and strong innovative consciousness, it has set up a “brand”in the national institutions of higher learning. In recent years, because of the high popularity rate of its undergraduates participating in extracurricular sci-tech activities, it has won over 1600 awards in provincial or national sci-tech contests. The one-time employment rate of its graduate students and that of its undergraduates always remain to be over 98% and over 96%, respectively, ranking among the first in the national institutions of higher learning. In 2006, it passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of Education, winning the “Excellent” mark. In 2012, it was elected one of the 50 institutions of higher learning in China with model experience in graduate employment.

For many years, Xidian University has been committed to system research, key problem tackling, and engineering development in the field of electronic information technology, creating many“firsts” in that field, including the first weather radar, the first meteoric trail communication system, the first programmable radar signal processor, the first millimeter wave communication machine, as well as the first cord telegraph switching equipment, the first tower tube cavity oscillator, the first three dimensional phase array radar, etc. in the history of our army’s communication equipment, thus making significant contributions to the informationization of our country and to the modernization of our national defense. It has now 4 state key laboratories, 5 Ministry of Education key laboratories, 17 provincial/ministerial level key laboratories, and 6 provincial/ministerial level bases. It has also set up the National Defense Academy and the Aerospace Research Institute. It has successively undertaken over 1600 significant and key projects from the “863” Program, the“973”Program and the“Innovation Projects”, making a batch of landmark achievements. Since the“10th Five-Year Plan”, the target of scientific research of the university has been rising steadily, with 21% average annual increase in research funds and 25% average annual increase in the number of papers indexed by the three big indexing organizations and the university has won 12 national sci-tech awards, further laying its advantage position of scientific research with the national defense feature in the national institutions of higher learning.

Xidian University vigorously strengthens the production-study-research combination and constantly strengthens its sci-tech innovation ability. It has established the Shaanxi Provincial Industry Research Institute and the National University Sci-tech Park. At the same time, combining with the large-scale well-known enterprises and institutions at home, it has established joint-stock companies and strategic alliances, set up enterprise funds, built joint laboratories, and founded practice bases for postgraduates, thus effectively promoting the transformation of research achievements.

Xidian University actively carries out international and domestic exchanges and cooperation, and expands the development space outside. It has become a university built jointly with the CETC, the city of Xi’an, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, Shaanxi Province and the Ministry of Education successively. It has established friendly relations with universities and research institutions of more than 70 countries and regions, set up 4 national talents-recruiting bases under the “Talents-recruiting Program for Discipline Innovation in the Institutions of Higher Learning”. It has established the long-term strategic cooperation partnership with over 10 domestic research institutes, research centers and enterprise groups in the fields of electronics and aviation. Forty-five multinational companies such as Infineon, Intel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard have set up joint laboratories at Xidian University.

During more than 80 years since its founding, Xidian University has turned out over 160 thousand high-level talents in the fields of electronics and information for the country, of which more than 120 have become generals of the People’s Liberation Army, 16 have become academicians, and nearly 10 have taken the posts of leadership at the deputy ministerial level and above. A great number of leading lights and technical backbones in the IT industry are its outstanding alumni, such as Liu Chuanzhi who is chairman of the Board of Directors of the Lenovo Group, Li Mofang who won the international GSM prize, Wang Zhonglin who is an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and a famous expert in nanotechnology, and Yang Hong who is the deputy chief designer of the Shenzhou V and VI Spacecraft and the chief designer of the target aircraft “Heavenly Palace 1”. Scores of its renowned alumni have become directors of research institutes and presidents of universities.
